Yes, I would say doing a PhD in chemistry is quite stressful sometimes. I think because I love my job so much and I decide how to use my time, it can be easy for the job to take over my life! The key thing to do is to make sure I take breaks, go home at a sensible time, and not work at weekends. I like to go for a walk on the beach at lunchtime to calm down, and spend time with friends after work.
It can be quite stressful at times just becasuse it can get very busy and I feel like I have so much to do! But, that’s not everyday. To relieve stress I love to get outside for a cycle or a run or head to the gym. It’s pretty important to me to have a good work/life balance and I make sure I plan nice holidays and fun filled weekends.
As every job, being a scientist can be very stressful. When I get stressed I try to stay away for a bit from whatever it is that causes the stress and get my mind focused on something else. If I’m super stressed and nothing else has worked, I leave work early, go to the gym or go for a looooong walk at the beach to clear my head
Experiments are sometimes stressful. I tell you one of my story. I wrote a proposal to Rutherford Appleton laboratory (UK’s national synchrotron science facility) to conduct a high pressure experiment with two forms of TNT. Scientific community liked my idea and my proposal was granted. I then had to make two forms in the pure state. I could make one form easily but another form was not made until the last minute of the day I drove to the facility. I was extremely stressful.
How did I relieve my stress and make the form in the last minute?
I talked with other colleagues and one of them gave me the idea of how to make it. I followed his advice and made it. So if you are stressful, express your problems to your teachers or parents. Always keep in mind that stress is a normal thing and we all get it every now and then. So take it easily.
