Chemistry is what we call an enabling subject. Yes, there is lots of specific knowledge that you learn as a chemistry student that would help you with a chemistry-specific career. However, there a lots of other skills that widen the career choices for chemistry graduate. Indeed some of those skills will make you attractive to the finance industry (sometimes more attractive than graduate accountants and economists). Chemistry is also a good foundation to build post-graduate study in more focused topics and even Law and Medicine.
During my undergraduate degree I did many chemistry courses, such as analytical, organic, inorganic, physical and quantum chemistry. You can see that chemistry has many branches and then it’s up to you to decide which one to follow based on what you like. I think that having a chemistry degree opens the door for many different type of jobs. What I would have liked to have as part of my degree, was a course on science communication. I think it is very important to know how to communicate your science and research and there are many related jobs available nowadays.
After studying Chemistry at University, you can get lots of job offers; that includes jobs from oil company, jobs for chemists in the drug discovery unit and various other industries. You can also get teaching jobs. j
I think there are already lots of jobs to do with chemistry! As all the other scientists have already touched on, a base in chemistry can lead to so many different careers. I’d say I didn’t know about most of them when I went on to study the subject!
