The impact of my research is more indirect that that of some of the other participants. However, research students and research assistants from my group have gone on to fill may roles in the community… and that is probably the most direct impact on my work on the community in general.
I’m involved in discovering new medicines for neglected and tropical diseases – so, if we discovered one this would make a huge impact on the people who are currently suffering. This is something I would so much love to be a part of!
I have been working in two projects that will be helpful for rural areas in India and other similar places where you have plenty of sunlights; 1st project is to clean water using very small amount of catalyst and Sunlight. (Do you know what is a catalyst? Catalysts are very small amount of substrate that make reaction faster). The photo-catalysis will help to kill the bacteria and other pollutants in water.
My 2nd project will store sunlight in a phase change material and the heat can be used as cooking food at night. Solar-cooking will reduce the fuel consumption and pollution related to smoke.
My other projects are to make new crystal and to find out how they look like. Although it sounds not so serious; but this is the only way you can make new compounds. You may make 100 attempts to make 1 new compound, and then out of 100 new compound 1 will be really useful for the society. So this part of research is slow but it has a steady impact.
